What is the consensus on what we now refer to as transitional planes? I may have missed it, but I have been unable to find any reference to these planes by Paul Sellers, though I did see a video on tuning up a wooden plane. The general opinion that I have found on the Internet is somewhat unfavorable. Is there a reason to avoid these planes? Do they have any advantages? Can they be adequate tools after a tune up? Is there anything to avoid when purchasing them (I assume significant cracks in the sole would be an issue.)? I ask because they seem to be fairly plentiful in numbers and often cheaper than their iron counterparts.
